Another competitor may soon be entering the market for business oriented office productivity software. A project group manager from Adobe, in an interview earlier this year could not rule out the possibility that Adobe will use its currently strong position in the IT industry to launch its own web/desktop integrated office suite. This move by Adobe should have Microsoft technicians and sales reps very concerned.

Office application suite providers are now implementing a new frontier. Web-based office applications. Microsoft has finally released its Office Live Workspace application, which is an extension of the its standard Office suite. In this case however Microsoft is well behind the ball, as Google launched its Google Docs and Spreadsheets some time ago. Microsoft Office currently holds the majority market share in its industry; however opinion is becoming increasingly divided as competitive software floods the market. I some cases the competition is cheaper and even easier to use than the Microsoft offering, but publicity and active marketing has proven relatively ineffective until recently. Perhaps word of mouth is the reason OpenOffice document formats are becoming more popular or perhaps Microsoft have grown complacent in their long lived supremacy.

An article in a US newspaper today read that over 40% of businesses’ are unsatisfied with the office productivity that they use. Complaints ranged from the complexity of interfaces to colours used that hurt the eyes after long exposures. The world waits in eager anticipation as web goliath Google acquires Upstartle, the company that developed Writely, a word processing program. Rumour in IT circles has it that Google intends to develop its own web-based office productivity suite.
